CURRENT PROJECTS

Child Road Safety Education Program with the support of J&J, UPS and Fleet Forum

SIDART has been conducting child road safety education programmes at different locations in cooperation with Johnson & Johnson, UPS Foundation, and Fleet Forum in Jaipur (Rajasthan), Mumbai, Mulund (Maharashtra), Baddi (Himachal Pradesh) and Aurangabad (Maharashtra). As road safety education's practical aspects are not really included in Indian school curriculums, there is a big lack of knowledge and practice about the rules of road use/ safe road use/traffic aspects and road safety issues. The project's objective is to increase awareness about the importance of the topic and teach children as well as their parents how to conduct themselves and behave responsibly on the roads to minimize the risk of accidents.

The project, with the support of Johnson & Johnson, focuses on children in the age of 10-14, as children commonly start using roads alone at that age and therefore need to be trained. The pilot projects took place in the slums of Jawahar Nagar, Jaipur, as children from slums are often poorly educated and need these training. The program at Aurangabad was launched on 3rd February 2018 in 3 Schools namely MGM Clover Dale School, Alphonsa School and Tanwani High School. In these schools, an 8-week program has been launched with a focus on theory as well as practical.

Several seminars are held where parents and teachers are taught how to cross a road with children, why to wear helmets and other safety issues. Monthly meetings between the volunteers of the project and parents are organized, where they can share their experiences with the road safety education and survey the increased knowledge level of their children. In indoor activities the children develop the understanding of street signs and symbols as well as some basic rules of the street. In outside activities children are trained practically and apply their newly gained knowledge on the road. There are also street play performances to increase the awareness of the importance of child road safety education. At the program launch in Aurangabad, the traffic police along with Ms. Anahita Makhania- CSR head, Johnson & Johnson was present at the launch. SIDART is implementing the child road safety education program for 4th consecutive year with Johnson & Johnson.
